Bus Trip – Te Whiti Park 05 Oct

  • by

Here is the proposal for the Bus Trip out to Te Whiti Park in Lower Hutt.

The Bus for 05 Oct 2025 will drop the Runners off first near Naenae, on Waddington Drive near the corner of McEnroe Grove and then head to Te Whiti Park on White Line East and park there and remain there till the Walkers and Runners return.  There are toilets available at the carpark off Whites Line East.

The suggestion for the Café is one we have been to before – “Caffiend” on Jackson Street in Petone.

Proposed Routes

Runners – The Waddington Winder to Naenae, returning to Te Whiti Park (approx. 15km)

The Runners will cross the Waiwhetu Stream off Waddington Drive and
climb a new trail to most “The Waddington Winder”, to reach the ridgeline above.
If the stream is high an alternative entrance can be found off Judd Crescent, opposite #100.
From the ridgeline head north along the ECNZ Pylon Track all the way to Naenae and
descend on the newly upgraded track to Rata Street.
Down Hay Street to Waddington Drive and
follow the Waiwhetu Stream back to the start.
Turn left into Hamerton Street and
then follow Riverside Drive all the way (with a short detour along Wyndrum Ave) back to Te Whiti Park and
the waiting bus.

Walkers and Slower Runners – Te Whiti Riser (5km or 8km)

Many of the Walkers would have done the Te Whiti Riser a few years ago so this should be reasonably familiar.   While this is a hilly walk, the gradient is moderate and not steep, suitable footwear with good tread is recommended and walking poles will be useful for those that use them.  The Trail is dirt trail which depending on recent weather, may be a little muddy in places.

From the carpark follow the road around the back of the park to where the Trail starts behind the Waiwhetu Fitness Centre.
Follow the trail upwards, the trail will cross the firebreak twice so stick to the trail and do not go up the firebreak.
It is about 4km up the ridge above so I don’t expect everyone to reach the top and so you can turn around as you feel inclined to do so and return back down to the waiting bus.
The more energetic ones should aim to reach the top.
The views of the Hutt Valley and beyond are grand.

The Slower Runners can aim for the top too as they feel inclined to do so.

If there are Walkers that want only a flat walk, I suggest walking from Te Whiti Park northwards along nearby Riverside Drive and beside the Waiwhetu Stream making it up as you go.

Attached are a couple of photos of the Te Whiti Riser.

Cheers

Mark
